The Brotherhood of St Laurence

Established during the Great Depression, the Brotherhood of St Laurence has developed into an independent organisation with strong Anglican and community links. Today, we continue to fight for an Australia free of poverty.

Vision

An Australia free of poverty

The Brotherhood of St Laurence will work with others to create

  • an inclusive society in which everyone is treated with dignity and respect
  • a compassionate and just society which challenges inequity
  • a society in which all create and share prosperity, and share responsibility for each other
  • a sustainable society for our generation and future generations.

In working for an Australia free of poverty, we recognise the Indigenous custodians of this country. We are committed to understanding the effects of the dispossession of Indigenous Australians and to achieving reconciliation.

Mission

The Brotherhood will deliver services, develop policy and support social change to help achieve our vision by

  • empowering ourselves and the people we work for
  • developing and building community capacity, as part of the community
  • creating and developing enterprise projects and ventures as catalysts for individual and community transformation.

The Choir of Hope and Inspiration

Under the direction of Dr. Jonathon Welch AM, the Melbourne Street Choir Inc – previously known as the Choir of Hard Knocks but now known as The Choir of Hope and Inspiration provides a range of music, arts and social inclusion programs for people who are homeless and/or disadvantaged.

Objective

To develop, foster and promote outstanding social inclusion programs and outcomes through excellence in music education, the arts and choral singing.

Aims

  • To give homeless and disadvantaged people opportunities to further their personal development
  • To promote more positive attitudes towards homeless and disadvantaged people
  • To produce musical work of a professional standard so that participants benefit from being involved in something of quality
  • To develop the creativity, self-esteem, confidence, social networks, enjoyment and skills of homeless and disadvantaged people through regular music workshops and related activities that provide a welcoming, safe and non-judgmental environment
  • To demonstrate through the development of these qualities and skills, lasting and positive changes in the lives of participants depending on their circumstances. For some this may mean further engagement with community agency services; for others, living with more independence or gaining opportunities for work experience
  • To help create positive attitudes and understanding of homelessness amongst the general public and policy makers and to mitigate the social exclusion felt by participants

MSC is developing a comprehensive social inclusion program which will significantly increase the opportunities for social interaction, and further build confidence, pride, self esteem, education and employment opportunities and rehabilitation, via choir, arts and community participation.
